Gallium: it melts in your hand but it attacks other metals

gallium-melting-metal

This might be one of the rarest elements on earth. Galium is a metal with an ultra low melting point of just 29.76 °C and the ability to attack most of the other metals by diffusing into their metal lattice greatly and weakening their structure.

In 1871, the existence of gallium was first predicted by Russian chemist Dmitri Mendeleev, who named it “eka-aluminium” on the basis of its position in the periodic table. He also predicted several properties of the element, which correspond closely to real gallium properties, such as density, melting point, oxide character and bonding in chloride.

Elemental gallium is not found in nature, but it is easily obtained by smelting. Very pure gallium metal has a brilliant silvery color and its solid metal fractures like glass. Gallium easily alloys with many metals, and is used in small quantities as a plutonium-gallium alloy in the plutonium cores of nuclear bombs, to help stabilize the plutonium crystal structure.

This is the coolest thing that I have seen in my whole life. It makes me feel like I’m Magneto, controlling the metal properties. I’m really shocked by it. You should really check it out.

Should we fear an environmental war?

21SINO-HARBIN01-blog480

With a nearby winter coming soon, the city of Harbin is going through a very big problem; they can’t see! With only 10 meters of visibility the citizens need to stay home because highways, airports and schools have been closed.

This city nearby the Russian frontier has reached the highest amount of air pollution and people starting to get sick. The local people describe this as a “heavy fog” that don’t let you see the person with which you are talking, “You can’t see your own fingers in front of you.”

This problem becomes even more difficult because many people start going to the hospitals with respiratory problems.

The environmental officers started to make inspections on farms, factory smokestacks and vehicle emissions to try to stop the air pollution. The government is waiting the local weather results; expecting if rain comes before winter to clean the air.

This problem is getting worst and the city of Harbin has become the center of attention.  An Internet user said “If you think this is the movie set for ‘Silent Hill,’ ‘Resident Evil’ or ‘The Walking Dead,’ you are wrong — this is Harbin.

How is possible that in one of the most important countries in the world with one of the highest amount of technology, could happen this kind of problem? In my opinion, China is getting sick of technology and business, and they’re letting the environment collapse and put many lives in danger. If the rest of the world were to assume China’s environmental point of view, we will have to fight in an environmental war.

Spider sent into another dimension

So this video is one of the coolest things I’ve seen in a while. It’s about this spider that falls on this guy2s computer, so he decides to use a YouTube video to send it into another dimension.

That’s actually really clever. I would not be the way I handle things when I see a spider. If I were that guy, I would just scream and throw my computer away to kill the spider.

But I have to say I actually feel bad for the spider. What if you were just walking around and then suddenly you are in a tunnel with a lot of colors and shapes?

Check out the full video in case you’re interested. I hope you enjoy it much as I did.

TNT strikes again

In order to launch the HD TNT channel in Belgium, they placed a button on a quiet square. Above the button, a sign that read “Push to add drama” helped the plot look even more startling. All they had to do was wait for someone to push it.

And TNT strikes again! Great way of launching a TV channel. You can notice it has an exhausting work behind the scenes but it was totally worth it. I was so amazed, I couldn’t help but just stare!

A perfect team

This video is so great, because it shows the supernatural intelligence of an animal, in this case the horse. He seems to be playing with the bull. It’s impressive how the rider and the horse make a perfect team.

This isn’t as easy as it seems. You have to be very well prepared to do it because you are putting in risk the life of the horse and yours. The training with the horse takes place every day, because this is something which can’t be learned in two days.

In my opinion you need to trust in your capacity and in the horse’s. This is like a soccer match, you work as a team. If you are nervous, it will be dangerous because animals can feel what you feel. I love how the horse and the rider seem so peaceful together, while a really angry bull is trying to kill them.

Just one worry

1588

Alan Watts was born in January 1915 and died in November in 1973. He was a philosopher, writer and public speaker. He talks about what, in my opinion, is one of the toughest decisions that we are forced to make in life.

If the purpose of life is being happy, what would you prefer? Earning money and doing something that you hate for the rest of your life? But then, you wouldn’t be doing something that fulfils you.

The other choice is doing something that you love for the rest of your life, but what pays the bills while you live the fantasy? Is it a lack of sense of reality? I don’t think so: I agree with Alan Watts. As he said, if you really like what you are doing, you can eventually master it. And then, you will be able to get a good fee for whatever it is. So don’t worry too much.

Anyways, there is one thing that does worry me: the fact that we’re living in a world that is often pushing us towards the wrong decision.

I recommend you listen to the audio while you read it. It is very touching.

Military technology in Colombia

ejcembaejec

Juan Carlos Pinzon, the defense minister of Colombia, is trying to copy the Israeli system with the purpose of developing military technology in the country. He also said that Colombia has a good military technology but the economy and the situation of the country isn’t the best for the use of our resources in this area. Colombia is helped by the USA with a lot of military equipment since 1996, in the called “Plan Colombia” for the fight against the FARC (Fuerzas armadas revolucionarias de Colombia) that are one of the best equipped guerrillas in the world.

I think that it is very good for the country because our soldiers are one of the best in the world. They are almost every day in the jungle fighting against the illegal groups. If they are equipped with excellent weapons, they will protect us better and it would be more comfortable for them. They will have new weapons that maybe are not as heavy as the ones they have today. The soldiers could have more accuracy, and if they are already good with the old weapons, just imagine what they can do with modern ones.

Dishonest win

270473_heroa

This article talks about the BBVA Lof Spain. Real Madrid, in the previous round of the League, caused controversy since the match was influenced by the referee in favor of the white club. The merengue club made a poor match and Elche, their rival team, with much worse players than the Real Madrid players, played a great match. Elche actually tied the match in the 87 minute after the poor march of the merengue Club. The best player was Cristiano Ronaldo since he made the first goal and the second, which was the goal that generated more controversy. Carlos Sanchez, Elche player, was sure that it was not a penalty but Pepe, from Real Madrid, said that he really was a victim of the foul which produced the penalty.

I’m big fan of Real Madrid but my opinion as a fan is that the club made a poor match and they won the match with help from the referee. Pepe is a great player but he exaggerates in all the matches, and in this one especially made a horror movie because the non-existent foul of Carlos Sanchez. I think that a great player like Pepe doesn’t have to do these things, even if his team is losing the match by 100 goals. He has to act with respect and more when he is playing for an important institution. I was happy because my team won, but it was an incomplete satisfaction because as a fan I know that my team won the match without being honest. It is embarrassing to win like that and more playing against a bad team and you being at the top of the soccer world.

You Make Me

This video shows a spectacular late afternoon, with the immensity of the sea and its big waves, and the contrast with a big city. The construction of infrastructure, big buildings, avenues and bridges where one can observe the traffic.

The video reflects on how men change nature when constructing buildings, routes and bridges. It makes me think about how we’re taking care of the Earth.

The song does not have a lot of lyrics, but the music is calm and it makes me feel so inspired. I really recommend you this video; it’ll take you 3 minutes to watch it.

Tears in Heaven

“Tears In Heaven” is  a song composed by Eric Clapton in 1992, when his 4 years old son Conor died in an accident, falling from a 53th floor of a high building in Manhattan. This song won 3 Grammys in 1993 and was also a soundtrack of the movie “Rush”.

Through this song Eric Clapton express his feelings about the death of his son. I think the song helped him to recover from the pain, and also to console him.

The song talks about hope, recovering, being strong and carry on with life. This great composer finds a way to use the circumstances in his life to write songs, even if the circumstances are painful.

X- Men: Days Of The Future Past

The movie is a fiction movie, directed by Brian Singer. It will be shown on the 23th of May, 2014. The argument of the movie develops in events or facts of the future and past of the generation of mutants that will be captured in concentration camps, and most of the X-Men will be killed. The X-Men get together to fight for the survival of the mutants in two different times. They join their powers to the ones of “X-Men First Generation” in a battle that will change the past to save the future. They have to travel to the past and go to a specific event in 1973 to avoid and stop that catastrophe.

In my opinion this movie could be excellent, because it’s an action movie and also fiction movie. It has many special effects with a wonderful realism in its characterization. The director plays with the time frames and this will be an important factor to grasp the attention of the audience.

We want what we can’t have

Ben Haggerty, was born on June 19, (1983), in Seattle, Washington. He is a Hip-Hop rapper, known by his stage name Macklemore. Since 2000, he has independently released one mix tape, three EPs and two albums and significantly collaborated with producer Ryan Lewis. He has owned so many awards. His most sold album is The Heist, released on October 9, 2012. He is gay, and he expressed it in the single ¨Same Love¨.

In this song, he says a lot with few words. With this song he’s not just trying to tell to us about his life, he also is trying to make us see the truth behind the life you are living in this society. He also is trying to make us notice that some things are a dream.

What I think about the song is that it’s all true, everything he says is true. Society makes us want things, believe in things, do things. Like when the lyrics say “we want what we can´t have, community makes us want it”.

I love the whole video and song, but the part that I like most is the ending. After trying and doing everything for 100 dollars to buy a pair of shoes, the character finally gets them and brings them to school. He then sees that it´s just another pair of shoes.

Anti-Nazi propaganda app

hitler-big-lie

“It’s like Shazam, just with more Hitler” –The Daily Dot

One of the problems of the German police is the neo-Nazi propaganda, especially the songs. That’s why all the German legislators are meeting this week to discuss about an app, Shazam, with the purpuse to identify neo-Nazi songs.

This is a clever idea which is going to provide help to the German police. It is really handy and easy to use. But more importantly, it will stop most of the neo-Nazi propaganda, helping the development of a better country.
However, this app might violate laws against audio surveillance. German police and legislators have to think about it before developing it.

Alexis Sanchez

alexis_sanchez

Ex Udinese player Alexis Sanchez is one of Barcelona’s most expensive transfers in history: US$43mill ion in 2011 after his impresive run of form in the world cup. “El niño Maravilla”,  as he is known in his hometown, Tocopilla, Chile, is on the run of his life scoring seven goals in this Liga BBVA season after only averaging 8-12 goals with Barcelona FC in all competitions, in his previous seasons.

Besides his poor form, in July he was rumored to be exiting the team going towards a premier league team. Honestly, I am glad for Alexis and I think all he needed was some time and a change in the team staff. I think he needed someone like el Tata Martino, ExNewell’s manager, to help him find his path in Spain. It is truly remarkable what a change of mentality can do when it comes to goal scoring.

Ronaldinho aims for the Libertadores

18copa-articleLarge

His full name is Ronaldo De Asis Moreira but he is also known as Ronaldinho. He is now 33 years old and he is a legend of soccer: in all teams that he has ever been, he was the best.

He always won a lot of trophies, but now in his actual club he wants to win one of the most important trophies of the world: the “Copa Libertadores” of South America.

Against Newell’s Old Boys, his team lost the first game in Argentina. But Ronaldinho never gives up; they beat them in penalties in the second match. Now, the final is against Olimpia, team which has won this competition 3 times before. Ronaldinho won a lot of things in Europe but he said that he wants to win this trophy because it isvery important to him and his career.

There will be two matches: the first one will be in Paraguay and then, in Brazil. The favorite is Ronaldinho’s club Atletico Mineiro. I hope Ronaldinho wins this trophy because he is amazing. I like very much how he plays. A lot of people said that he doesn’t have his magic anymore but I think he still is fantastic and he will win that important trophy to end his career.

Elysium

This is a recently released movie directed and written by Neill Blomkamp. It shows a very realistic hypothetic future in which the Earth gets completely damaged by overpopulation and contamination so the richest people create a utopic society inside a space station, while the rest of humanity remains on Earth, where everyone is poor and sick.

I think this movie warns people about how the planet could end if we keep having a society  with extreme inequality and completely polarized conditions. The movie also has very good action scenes and special effects which makes it  interesting and entertaining. But one thing I didn’t like about Elysium is that the story goes on too fast, so people can’t understand it as much as they would like to. Anyways, I invite you to watch it and make up your own opinion.

Hall of Fame

The Script is a pop rock band from Dublin, Ireland. It is formed by Danny O’Donoghue (voice), Mark Sheehan (guitar) and Glen Power (drums). This video shows a family where the father is affectionate with his daughter while the mother is so angry with his son. These two brothers want to reach their own goals each. She wants to be a good ballerina and he wants to be a boxer. They have to face several obstacles but as the song says: with dedication and effort they reached their dreams.

The video is a reflection on how to build a profession. If you have some problems, don’t worry about it: we are in the absolute capacity to overcome them and get to be a part of the hall of fame. This song has great lyrics and it makes me feel so inspired when I listen to it. I really recommend the lyrics of this song.

Colombia’s weak defensive core

image (4)It is accurate to say that the key to be successful in a football tournament is a stable base of defenders. Colombia may not have the best one, but it does it’s job.

Colombia’s defensive core can be seen as a weak one due to its players. Mario Yepes and Luis Perea might not be the fastest and they can be overcame by a skillful and fast attacker. But Colombia’s manager, Jose Nestor Pekerman, has solved this serious problem with two magnificent players: Pablo Armero and Camilo Zuñiga. They have the fastness and skill to recover any ball and collaborate to initiate one of the most amazing and successful counterattack any National Team would fear today.

However, this might be a risk because Colombia just has a few players to replace these two should they get injured. Some people say Arias is the perfect candidate if Zuñiga gets hurt; or if Armero does, Zuñiga can change sides and give Arias his place, but I still think Pekerman has to realize he’s wasting great players like Zapata, Balanta and Aquivaldo, who are persistent in their respective teams and deserve a place at Colombia’s starting 11. With the World Cup coming up, he might have to watch for Colombian world class players to ensure a good performance in the tournament.

Being a Latin American

I really like Calle 13, because they talk about topics that are not common. Many times they criticize the Government or other social phenomena, with lyrics that are really easy to understand.

In this video, they show us how it is being a Latin American, the identity the Latin American people, with lyrics that are not totally direct, because they recur to metaphors. The video also shows images that are very well related with the lyrics. All these things make you think, what is it like to be a Latin American?

Well, in this video the Latin American is described as a hard working person. Also they are related to the agriculture and all the effort that the peasant families have to do every day. In conclusion, it’s a really good video, I recommend you to see it.

Enjoy life

This song was the last hit of Marc Anthony, the Boricua singer. The song is characterized for being positive and has a lot of rhythm, so people love to dance it. It is a song that says that life is to be enjoyed; being sad or suffering isn’t good because inthe end, you will forget it.

I love this song because the singer has a perfect voice and it expresses a lot of feelings. Sometimes music brings back memories. In this case, this song reminds you of the bad things that have occurred and how you overcame through enjoying, dancing and singing. I think that this song is beautiful; it makes you happy. The more you listen to it the more you want to dance and enjoy the moment.

Pogo

Pogo is a way of expression attending to loud music concerts. It’s not a dance, they say it started with punk music and it continued with branches of rock. In this event there are lots of people and this is why a large percentage of them seem to get hurt.

I find this activity very interesting. It sounds weird to express your emotions on a loud Rock concert. I think it’s dangerous and there is no need to be exposed to getting hurt but people do it because music arouses strong emotions. However, it still seems weird and interesting at the same time. Its also a good topic to discuss and investigate.

Unsustainable

Muse is a rock band from Devon, Teignmouth. It is an alternative rock band and is often associated with space rock and progressive rock.Their music currently mixes sounds from genres such as electronic music, hard rock, experimental rock, classical music, rock opera and many others.

This particular song makes me think of a lot of things, for example, the chaos that we are currently causing. Muse are trying to tell us their own view of the world. After seeing this video, I understand what they’re trying to say: the world is in chaos, just because everyone is trying to be better than the others. Numbers are dragging us to our self-destruction and the economy of the world is unsustainable.

Just the name of the song gives me a lot to think about.

R.I.P.D.

R.I.P.D is a recently released movie directed by Robert Schwentke. It talks about the story of a recently murdered police officer. After he dies, he joins the R.I.P.D, a police department that fights against the “undead” people. During the movie this man tries to find the man who killed him and why he did it. This movie is kind of similar to the Men In Black movies, because both talk about a police department that no one knows it exists, which fights against monsters and creatures that disguise themselves as normal people.

I recommend it because it’s a really interesting and funny to watch, but at the same time it doesn’t have a very common topic, which is very interesting. Watch it and make your own opinions.

Neymar

neymar-barcelona-salary-top-best-player (1)

In 2011, there was a soccer game, where Neymar was playing with Brazil. When he won, he went to play with his team, Santos football team, with which he won the “Copa Santander Libertadores”. On December 2011, we was the winner of “La copa internacional de America” and played with “El Campeón de Europa (Barcelona)”. During the game the superiors of Barca´s team saw that Neymar made a good job, and all the abilities he had. So they decided that when Neymar would finish his work with Santos, he was going to be part of Barcelona´s team. Then, during this year, he played “La copa confederaciones” with Brazil, in which he made one of the three points that gave the victory to Brazil.  The most surprising fact is that he cost 57 million of euros.

My favorite hobbie is to play football, and my favorite player is Neymar. I think that he has some unique techniques that he uses to help the team to win. He shows us that group work is really important if you know how to do it. Besides, Neymar is a guy who has very clear goals, and he does everything to make them true.

A great concert

“Metallica: orgullo , pasión y gloria” was a concert of this famous group in 2009 in the Mexico City. This concert was so amazing, they released a DVD of the great night. It was one of the most exciting and historical concerts of this group. “Seek and Destroy”, a song from the album “Kill ’em all”, ended the concert. They made a version of this song which  was much longer and more emotive

I think it is a great way to end a concert. I find it very clever to play with the emotions of the audience in that way. This proves that this is definitely an extraordinary group, very important in the history of rock music. A great concert.

Why is Bogota’s mobility so deficient?

Bogota-trafficIn Bogotá, the sale of vehicles has increased dramatically in the last years. Only in 2012, Fenalco said that 311,912 sales were recorded by the year. In this regard, the Veeduria Distrital has stated in their reports that in Bogota are circulating over 1,200,000 vehicles and expressed: “Whereas previously more than 600 thousand vehicles were circulating for near 14.500 km from length of the total of the road mesh last year, the double of the cars did it for something more about 14.800 km, when the thing to expect was that they were doing it at least in 28 thousand kilometers… “[i]

The mobility is part of one of the fundamental rights of the Political Constitution of Colombia: “Every Colombian, with the limitations of the law, has the right to move freely, throughout the country, in and out of it, and remain and reside in Colombia”[ii]. But this right is broken by the problems in the mobility in Bogotá.

Some of the reasons of the traffic in Bogota are: 1) The corruption in the adjudication (Constructions without studies and designs, without planning) and worse execution of the works in the roads infrastructure (Deficient and incomplete works, for example Transmilenio to the Airport), 2) Lack of maintenance of the roads and undue occupation of the routes between the others, the lack of information regarding the use of the new cards to the citizens over the new integrated system of public transportation.

The Veeduria Distrital has said that the increase in the traffic decreases the speed of the cars: while five years ago cars were travelling at 33 km/h, now they move at 24 km/h. The speed of the public system was also affected: the buses, busetas and taxis, before the 2010 were 53 minutes late when arriving to their destination, whereas this year it has increased in an average of 64 minutes late per arrival.

We can conclude that we are facing an absence of governmental politics to guarantee the right of free traffic, despite of the fact that the “Pico y Placa” equally contributed to the purchase of vehicles. The level of education does not exist for the efficient use of public services: Absence of a plan for the execution of the works and maintenance of the roads while respecting the public resources. Communication deficiency towards the citizens regarding the new Integrated System of Urban Transportation. This means that we need a better development in the mobility of our city and a better defense of our rights as citizens.

BBM makes big change

andyios_142110584815_640x360_171539318402

Blackberry Company has revealed  that  BBM (Black Berry Messenger) will be downloadable for other devices different from Black Berry, such as Android devices and iOS 7 devices. Black Berry company also revealed that the release date of this amazing type of messaging is this next weekend. From that moment on, other electronic devices will be able to use BBM. This decision of the Black Berry company is due to the drop in sales. Nobody buys Blackberry anymore, and the company is in a bad situation.

I think it’s a really good decision, because so many people bought a Black Berry just for the Black Berry Messenger. Now everybody can use it,  so this is something good for the company. These two goalkeepers have being facing each other for over ten years now. However, they are very good friends.

The first time that they faced each other was in 2002-03 in the Champions League semi-finals. After that, they have faced each other 12 more times. In the meantime, both of them have won a lot of awards and titles. Buffon won 34 individual awards and 14 titles while Casillas won 20 individual awards and 21 trophies.

In 2003 Buffon was voted the best goalkeeper in the world. Ten years later, the roles were reversed and Casillas was ahead of Buffon. This award has been shared by them: Casillas has won 5 and Buffon has won 4.

I think that these legends of football stand for what a good football player should be: fair both inside and outside of the field.
